All-Natural Water Filter

My team and I designed and created a water filter with all-natural materials. The goal of this project was to create a sustainable water filter that could filter turbid water (500-700 NTU) down to "clean"water (0-10 NTU). Still, we could only use "found" materials, or materials that you could easily find in the outside world. We faced several challenges in developing a solution. For example, in our first test, the filtered water was dirtier than the original water. To determine where the error was occurring, we tested each layer separately and then put them together at the end. We determined that hte sand, even though it had been clearned several times, was still not filtering the water. We decided to cut the sand out of our plan completely, resutling in our final filter that measured 1.36 NTU. These challenges reflect the same type of problems that I will face in my engineering career: learning from failures, adapting to change, and how to come up with a solution under specific constraints. This project simulated real-world enigneering conditions in areas where certain materials are harder to obtain. Issues such as access to clean drinking wter are constatnly evolving and growing, requiring a certain mindset to be able to solve them. This project challenged me to think differently about sustaibaility and resource management, which is very different than projects in my other classes.
